After nearly four years from her last appearance on court, Serena Williams is officially making her return to professional tennis, Yankee Scores reports…
A Generation-Defining Comeback
According to WTA, the 44-year-old revealed on Monday that she will accept a wildcard entry into the upcoming HSBC Championships in Queen’s Club, London. The tournament is a 500-series tournament which will be played next week.
“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter,” Williams said in an announcement from the tournament. “Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages.”
The Unrivaled Legacy Reopens
Apart from winning 23 Grand Slams, the highest ever won by a female player in the Open Era, Williams has clinched 73 singles titles, four Olympic gold medals, and spent 319 weeks at No. 1 ranking in women’s tennis.
Furthermore, Williams also holds 14 Grand Slam doubles titles with sister Venus, making her the only player in history who has achieved Golden Slams in both singles and doubles events.
Williams’ return to professional tennis was officially announced by the WTA in their Twitter post.

“Serena is one of the greatest athletes of all-time, with a legacy that extends far beyond the court,” WTA chair Valerie Camillo said in a statement. “Her return is an expression of her passion for competition, and I cannot wait to see her face a new generation of top players.
“Serena is not just a great champion. She’s a successful entrepreneur, a powerful advocate for the issues that matter — and one of the most iconic women in the world. We are thrilled to welcome her back to the WTA Tour at this hugely exciting moment for women’s tennis.”
Williams is reported to have made over $94 million via prize money and is considered the highest-paid female athlete ever.
“Evolving” Back to the Baseline
Williams dropped hints of her return on Monday morning through a social media post from one of her sponsors, Nike. In the clip that lasts 17 seconds, Williams can be seen walking towards her phone ringing on a tennis court. The message reads “guess everyone heard the news” appears.
After just a few minutes of posting the hint, HSBC Championships posted on social media that “the Queen has returned.” Although her return is expected to spark discussions about her participation in Wimbledon, which will begin on June 28, it’s unclear what other tournaments Williams intends to participate in. Jill Smoller, Williams’ agent, has not responded to ESPN’s questions regarding Williams’ return.
In an essay published in Vogue magazine in August 2022, Williams said that the next tournament she would be participating in will be the last, citing her wish to grow her family. She chose to use the word “evolve” rather than “retirement” when discussing retirement plans.
