Calos Alcaraz came back from a long layoff with yet another outstanding fourth-round victory at the US Open against Tommy Paul.
The 23-year-old Spanish tennis player managed to play an outstanding game to win against American 20th seed Tommy Paul 6-4 6-3 6-4.
Thus, he did not lose a single set since his return from an almost five-month injury to make it to the quarter-final in New York where he will play against the American eighth seed Ben Shelton.
As mentioned above, a wrist injury prevented Alcaraz from participating in the French and Wimbledon Opens this summer.
Alcaraz won the previous two Grand Slams, the US Open last year and the Australian Open this year, which makes him win 18 matches in a row in these tournaments.
However, for this tournament in New York, Alcaraz decided to focus more on his recovery process, trying to keep his wrist healthy by avoiding his favorite activities in his free time.
“I’ve been really focused on the recovery with my team, with myself, doing the right things off the court trying to be healthy and in good shape for the next round,” he said.
“Those days, if I’m practising or not, I’m trying to be chill and focus on the next round. So golf this year isn’t an option.”
Alcaraz has won all three of his tour-level matches against Shelton, who beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 6-3 6-4 later on Sundaym, per BBC Sport.
“If Shelton were to come through, he is the kind of player that can knock the racquet out of your hand,” said American former player Jeff Tarango on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra.
“It’s going to be a real test to see how Alcaraz’s wrist is with a 149mph serve coming to that forehand, but Alcaraz should get through Shelton if his wrist is fine.”
