The New York Giants cut their star wideout, Odell Beckham Jr., after the seasoned player could not make any significant impact in his second stint with the club.
Beckham was on the roster bubble because the Giants had to decide by now what to do with wideout Braxton Berrios who was eligible to be elevated from the practice squad no more. Berrios was promoted to the active roster Tuesday.
The Giants promoted wide receiver Charlie Jones from the practice squad and took the place on the active roster which was vacated by outside linebacker Brian Burns when the latter went to the injured reserve with a torn ACL on Sunday.
Beckham, 33, does not seem to become part of the Giants’ practice squad anytime soon, sources tell ESPN. The former three-time Pro Bowler had hoped for a different outcome when he decided to finish some of his “unfinished business” with the franchise which drafted him in the 12th round in 2014.
On the other hand, Beckham appeared in 19 plays in three games without a single catch.
Beckham looked forward to bringing back his career as he didn’t play in the NFL since 2024 after he caught just nine receptions for 54 yards with the Miami Dolphins.
After re-signing with the Giants this past spring, Beckham was informed by his coach John Harbaugh that he needs to earn a spot on the team, and the reality is there that he may be cut in the summer.
However, Beckham earned a spot in New York’s final 53-man roster as the fifth receiver last month and he is expected to contribute to the offense.
Beckham saw just six snaps in New York’s 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday where he was targeted one time — a pass from quarterback Jameis Winston that would have been intercepted. It was Beckham’s first target with the Giants the second time around.
It was meaningful for Beckham to return to New York and make the team after training camp. He was nostalgic when he got his introduction with the starters before playing against the Dallas Cowboys in the opener.
Enthusiastic fans chanted “OBJ” in the fourth quarter during Sunday’s game against the Titans.
The Giants were where Beckham began his career with a splash. He had over 1,300 yards in each of his first three professional seasons and was setting a record pace until he suffered numerous injuries, which led to him being traded to the Cleveland Browns.
He has also played for the Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens, and Dolphins. He has caught 575 passes for 7,987 yards with 59 touchdowns in his career.
