Montreal Sprint Qualifiers: Mercedes Dominates, Russell Ahead of Antonelli

George Russell

Mercedes led the Canadian GP Sprint Qualifying, taking the one and two spots, Yankee Scores reports.

George Russell finally defeats team-mate Kimi Antonelli to the Sprint pole at the Canadian Grand Prix in a nerve-wracking battle at the end of the Qualifying.

Russell beat Antonelli by just 0.068s. The British racer, who is 20 points behind Italian teenager Antonelli, enjoyed the new Mercedes upgrades as they put him further ahead of the field.

McLaren’s duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finished 3rd and 4th, over three tenths behind Russell.

“This feels great after a tough Miami but I never doubted myself. I know what I can do. Miami is unique but this is an amazing circuit with high grip,” said Russell.

“It feels you are driving a proper F1 car around here, which is how it should be. It came together”

Despite Lewis topping SQ1 and was second SQ2, he finished 5th ahead team-mate Charles Leclerc in sixth after the McLarens jumped him to push him down the pecking order.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar finished seventh and eighth to round up the top 8.

Arvid Linblad in his first Montreal outing finished ninth with Williams’ Carlos Sainz in 10th.

After being outperformed all weekend in the last three races by fellow team-mate had to wait three weeks to finally land a punch back. Russell has always been strong at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, having won in Canada last year.
