Álvarez Saga: Barcelona, Real Madrid Both Knocked Back as Atlético Hold Firm

The transfer window hasn’t even opened yet but the most dramatic saga of the summer is well underway.

Atletico Madrid’s Julian Álvarez is the most sought-after striker on the planet right now. And he is at the centre of a three-club standoff that is getting messier by the day, Yankee Scores reports.

It began with Barcelona. The Blaugrana kicked off the bidding with an offer of €100 million for the Argentine striker, which was flatly rejected by Atlético Madrid around May 29. No counter offer. No talking. Just a door slammed close.

Atlético even accused Barcelona of running a “smear campaign” and spreading “fake news” over their pursuit of the player, even going as far as to post parody images of Barcelona stars Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha in Atlético shirts.

Then Real Madrid walked in

Real Madrid then entered the fray with Barcelona after revealing that Atlético Madrid had also turned down their €150 million ($173m) bid for Álvarez.

Florentino Pérez, who has just been re-elected president of Madrid, publicly promised supporters that he would put a Galáctico-level offer on the table the moment he was re-elected, per ESPN

The offer was confirmed by Real Madrid in an official statement, but Atlético turned it down, citing the player’s release clause. Then they took it a step further on social media.

Atletico responded to Real Madrid’s announcement with a sarcastic list of “clarifications” that brutally mocked their city rivals in a very public takedown.

So what’s Álvarez’s price tag exactly?

The 26-year-old, who joined Atlético from Manchester City in 2024, has a whopping €500 million release clause in his contract.

But there are reports of clauses that would allow some Champions League clubs, including Barcelona, to sign him for around €150 million but taxes would push that figure even higher.

The choice seems obvious to the player himself. Álvarez now has a move to Barcelona as a priority for the 2026-27 season and despite interest from Real Madrid, Arsenal and PSG, the Blaugrana remain his desired destination.

Álvarez grew up idolising Lionel Messi at Barcelona and is seen as someone who would have no problem agreeing personal terms.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta considers him the club’s strongest striking target

The problem for Barça is the Money

Given Barcelona’s recent financial history – including emergency sales of broadcast rights – every major expenditure comes under intense scrutiny and Álvarez’s contract runs until 2030, so Atlético are in no rush to negotiate.

Real Madrid, unlike Barcelona, are less pressed as they have Vinícius Jr. and Kylian Mbappé already in attack. Their bid seems more like a power play than a serious pursuit, one that conveniently inflates the price for their competitors.

For now, this war is being won by Atlético. With a €500 million release clause, a player tied down until 2030 and no obligation to sell, Diego Simeone’s side have all the cards.
