Curacao Earns First Ever World Cup Point Against Ecuador

Curaçao played one of the great defensive displays of the World Cup, holding a strongly fancied Ecuador to a scoreless draw in Kansas City, giving the tiny island nation its first-ever World Cup point, Yankee Scores reports.

Goalkeeper Eloy Room was the star performer, racking up 15 saves as Curaçao’s tight 5-4-1 formation resisted wave after wave of Ecuadorian attack.

Ecuador had 15 shots on goal without scoring, the most in a single World Cup match without a goal since 1966, according to ESPN, which was a staggering statistical oddity considering how completely they controlled possession and territory.

Ecuador’s experienced talisman Enner Valencia, chasing a new national scoring record, had the best two chances of the game but couldn’t turn either of them into goals. A superb Room save early eluded him, as did a last-ditch tackle by Jurrien Gaari later on the other end of the encounter.

Ecuador dominated possession 65 percent and out-shot Curaçao 27-10 but could not find a breakthrough against a defense that simply would not break.

Just days ago Curaçao were hammered 7-1 by Germany in their World Cup debut, Livano Comenencia’s goal their lone moment of delight in the competition before now. Keeping a clean sheet against a CONMEBOL qualifier is one of the biggest defensive performances in the group stage so far.

The draw leaves Ecuador’s prospects of a knockout stage berth dangling by a thread. Sebastián Beccacece’s side will need a win over Germany in their last group game to stand any genuine hope of going through.

Curaçao will end their historic first campaign against Ivory Coast, seeking to build on a result manager Dick Advocaat could hardly have dreamed of.
