LeBron James is not short of options after his exit from the LA Lakers. As fans and media continue to speculate his next move, the Minnesota Timberwolves have also shown keen interest and made a unique offer.
The Timberwolves believe they can offer the 41-year-old a rare combination of contention, reduced workload and legacy.
This isn’t just about joining another playoff team, the pitch goes. It’s about getting Minnesota a first championship in franchise history.
That’s the angle the Timberwolves hope can separate them from rivals like the Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers, per Marca.
Those teams might have star power, market appeal, or emotional history. Minnesota can give James a chance to do something that’s never been done before.
“The Wolves firmly believe they have the best situation for the 41-year-old James as he prepares for his 24th season,” Jon Krawczynski wrote in The Athletic.
“They have a core headlined by Edwards, Ball and McDaniels that can take a lot of the offensive pressure off James’ shoulders. They have McDaniels and Gobert to help ease James’ workload on defense, as well.”
Wolves’ Strategic Plan for LeBron
The plan is to shield LeBron James from heavy defensive assignments through Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert, while LaMelo Ball serves as another playmaker.
Anthony Edwards is the heart of the Timberwolves’ case. He’s already shown he can shoulder the scoring load, averaging 28.8 points per game last season, giving James a way to preserve some energy through the regular season and hone his impact when the playoffs come around.
That balance is important at this point in his career. James can still change games, but the right landing spot has to allow him to pick his moments instead of carry everything.
James’ decision isn’t expected to come immediately. The four-time MVP is still weighing his options, his agent Rich Paul told Forbes.
