Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn is back for his 18th season with the only NHL team he has ever played for. Benn has agreed to a one-year contract for the 2026-27 season, two weeks before his 37th birthday.
Contract Information
The package includes a base salary of $850,000, the league minimum, and $1,150,000 in performance bonuses. It’s the second consecutive offseason Benn has had to consider his future, after playing out a one-year contract last season that followed an eight-year, $76 million deal that expired.

A Hard Year By His Standards
Benn struggled with injury during the 2025-26 campaign. A punctured lung forced him to miss the first 19 games and he ended up playing just 60 games – his fewest in a full 82-game season.
He still provided 15 goals and 21 assists.
Modano Closing In
Only Hall of Fame center Mike Modano has played more games with the franchise than Benn, whose 1,252 regular-season games played, 414 goals and 992 points are second all-time in Dallas history.
Benn has posted 80 points (28 goals, 52 assists) in 126 postseason games but has yet to win a Stanley Cup.
Front Office Appreciates His Leadership
“Jamie’s leadership and his commitment to this organization is truly second to none and he’s helped define our culture”, general manager Jim Nill said, adding that Benn continues to set the bar on and off the ice, per ESPN.
Teammates Wanted Him Back
Benn said in May, after Dallas was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, that he planned to take time before deciding on his future.
Coach Glen Gulutzan made his preference known afterward, calling it a “slam dunk” that Benn come back.
Long-time teammate Tyler Seguin, who is entering the final year of his contract, had also hoped for one more shot at a title alongside his captain.
