FIFA have launched disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and numerous players after a number of events during and after Argentina’s 2026 World Cup campaign.
The inquiry concerns an incident after Argentina’s 2-1 semi-final victory over England when players appeared to hold up a banner with the inscription “Las Malvinas Son Argentinas” – referring to Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands, per BBC
FIFA rules prevent political or non-sporting displays at its tournaments and the Argentine association might face disciplinary punishment.
The governing body is also investigating other alleged breaches including racist chanting and gestures, late kick-offs, security and inappropriate conduct by players and supporters.
A big portion of the inquiry also covers the chaotic circumstances following Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final in New Jersey.
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has been criticised for an incident with Spain’s Gavi after players and officials from both countries were also subject to disciplinary action over the post-game events.
FIFA has not yet announced the final penalty, therefore the extent of any possible fines, suspensions or other measures is not yet evident
