Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi’s impact on Major League Soccer continues to be felt both on and off the pitch. The Inter Miami superstar has more than doubled his base salary in a new deal, earning $25 million with total compensation of $28.3 million, more than twice that of any other player in MLS. Yankee Scores reports.

Record‑Breaking Compensation

According to the MLS Players Association, Messi’s guaranteed compensation eclipses the payrolls of 28 of the league’s 29 teams. Miami’s overall payroll now stands at $54.6 million, far ahead of second‑place LAFC at $32.7 million.

The league average guaranteed compensation rose nearly 9% compared to last fall, underscoring Messi’s influence on MLS economics.

Messi’s Contract and Performance

Messi’s initial MLS contract in 2023 included a $12 million base salary. His new three‑year deal, signed last October, runs through 2028 and reflects his role in leading Miami to its first MLS title. The 38‑year‑old captain of Argentina has scored 59 goals in 64 regular‑season matches with Miami, including nine in 11 games this season. He led MLS with 29 goals last year, earning his second straight MVP award.

Other Top Earners

Los Angeles FC’s Son Heung‑min ranks second with $11.1 million in total compensation, while Miami midfielder Rodrigo de Paul is third at $9.6 million. Atlanta’s Miguel Almirón, San Diego’s Hirving Lozano, and Vancouver’s Thomas Müller are among the other high‑profile names earning over $5 million. In total, 133 MLS players now make at least $1 million annually.

The Bigger Picture

Messi’s salary figures include marketing bonuses and agent fees but exclude additional agreements with Miami affiliates. His presence has transformed MLS’s financial landscape, pushing payrolls higher and spotlighting the league globally. As he continues to dominate on the field, his contract cements him as the face of MLS both competitively and commercially.
