A New King in the West
However, Oklahoma City has its work cut out for them on figuring out how they can get better despite once looking like a dynasty in waiting.
In what was supposed to be a showdown between Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (MVP), and Victor Wembanyama (Defensive POY) – both All-Stars for the Thunder – it was a key transition block by the Spurs reserve center Luke Kornet which turned things around in favor of San Antonio, as Wembanyama sat the rest of the way on the bench due to a 5th foul.
Nevertheless, Wembanyama ended up with the most points among Spurs players (22 points along with 7 rebounds), whereas SGA posted a team-high 35 points plus 9 assists.
It all hinged on what the two-time MVP SGA would do, knowing as he did that his two main teammates Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell couldn’t participate due to injuries.
True to form, once again in this series, the OKC bench came through in force. As a matter of fact, it was Cason Wallace making his way into the starting lineup that made a difference, scoring 17 points.

The key player off the bench had to be Jaylin Williams, who contributed 11 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and zero turnovers in what was mostly a defensive stand against Wembanyama.
Meanwhile, the OKC starters in the frontcourt, Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, totaled 11 points on 4-for-9 shooting along with 9 rebounds and 4 turnovers.
Tough Night for Holmgren
Of these two starters in particular, Chet Holmgren had a tough night and essentially disappeared from the game altogether. Holmgren signed a five-year contract extension worth $239 million starting next season, and in tonight’s game, he attempted just two field goals, both in the opening period, particularly quiet in the fourth quarter.
Holmgren stands 7 feet 1 inch tall and was named the third-team All-NBA selection this season; however, he was thoroughly outclassed in the playoffs by a bigger freak of nature.
No Title Defense for OKC
OKC becomes the latest champion unable to defend their title, guaranteeing a brand-new champion for the eight consecutive season—a unique accomplishment in the NBA.
The San Antonio Spurs move on to the NBA Finals where they will face the Knicks, whose streak of excellence is 14 games long, in the process surpassing even the 1999 Finals appearance of Tim Duncan, who, then aged 22, led them to a championship victory.
