Victor Wembanyama

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is traveling with the team to Oregon as he continues to navigate the NBA’s concussion protocol. Yankee Scores reports…

Victor Wembanyama will accompany the Spurs in Oregon for games against the Trail Blazers and complete the process of the NBA concussion protocol.

Wembanyama Progresses in NBA Concussion Protocol

When asked about Victor Wembanyama possibly playing in the third game against the Trail Blazers on Friday at the Moda Center, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said, “He continues to make progress,” adding that the star center was not ruled out from participating in the game.

“He looks good,” Johnson said. “The update is that he is following each protocol, he’s progressing, and he’ll travel with the team.”

The series is tied 1-1. Game 4 is Sunday in Portland.

“To my knowledge, we haven’t even had that discussion [about ruling Wembanyama out],” Johnson said. “The protocol is the protocol. The league is who’s mostly at the top of that. We’ll just hope that he continues to progress. Whenever that timing is, that’s when it will be.

“We’ll just kind of keep going through the protocol, and hopefully he continues to progress. It’s pretty straightforward. So obviously we hope he’ll be back at some point. But we’ll allow the protocol to play out. There’s nothing more important than his health.”

Health Status

After testing, Wembanyama’s results will be reviewed against his baseline neurological evaluation before the start of each season to see whether he can continue on in the return to play process.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Wembanyama conducted some cardio exercise later in the day on Wednesday, but his symptoms were not progressing.

The Concussion

Wembanyama suffered a concussion while dribbling into the basket with 8:57 left in the second quarter in Game 2. At that moment, Jrue Holiday was guarding him.

Under the NBA’s concussion protocol guidelines, a player cannot return to full participation for 48 hours after the time of the injury.  However, gradual activity can resume after 24 hours as long as symptoms don’t worsen.
