George Pickens Tagged by Dallas

The Dallas Cowboys placed the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens for the 2026 season. Pickens will earn $27.298 million, keeping him in Dallas for at least one more year. The team hopes to negotiate a long-term extension before the July deadline.

Cowboys’ Frequent Use of the Franchise Tag

The Cowboys have often relied on the NFL franchise tag to retain star talent. Pickens is the 11th player in franchise history to be tagged since 1993. Dallas has used the tag more than most teams, especially in recent years.

Early Franchise Tag Decisions

In 2002, offensive lineman Flozell Adams was the first Cowboy tagged, signing a one-year deal worth $4.9 million. Cornerback Ken Hamlin followed in 2008, tagged at $4.4 million before signing a six-year, $39 million extension.

Anthony Spencer and Dez Bryant

Linebacker Anthony Spencer was tagged in 2012 for $8.8 million and again in 2013 for $10.6 million, becoming the first Cowboy tagged in consecutive years. Wide receiver Dez Bryant was tagged in 2015 at $12.823 million, later signing a five-year, $70 million contract.

DeMarcus Lawrence and Dak Prescott

Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was tagged in 2018 for $17.143 million and again in 2019 for $17.128 million, before agreeing to a five-year, $105 million deal. Quarterback Dak Prescott played under the exclusive tag in 2020 for $31.4 million and in 2021 for $37.1 million, eventually signing a four-year, $160 million extension.

Dalton Schultz and Tony Pollard

Tight end Dalton Schultz was tagged in 2022 at $10.9 million after a breakout season. Running back Tony Pollard was tagged in 2023 for $10.09 million, playing under the tender before joining the Titans in 2024.

George Pickens Joins the List

Now in 2026, George Pickens continues the Cowboys’ franchise tag tradition. After a dominant season with 93 receptions, 1,429 yards, and nine touchdowns, Dallas ensured he remains part of their offense. Whether a long-term deal is reached will be the key storyline heading into the season.
