Veteran inside linebacker Bobby Okereke has signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers Saturday.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, it seems like Okereke is joining an ongoing open starting competition beside another new addition – linebacker Devin Lloyd, who is a fellow free agent.
Two young linebackers – Trevin Wallace (2024 third-round draft pick) and Claudin Cherelus – had competed through summer months without any clear winner announced after the training camp and the preseason.

However, considering Okereke’s experience as a starter at middle linebacker position for two teams, he might take precedence over both Wallace and Cherelus going into Week 1.
Okereke has not been involved in any team this offseason. However, the 30-year-old middle linebacker has been playing the last three seasons for the Giants. Before arriving at the Giants, Okereke spent four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts as their 2019 third-round draft selection.
Okereke Career Stats and Track Record
Okereke has made 805 total tackles (34 for loss), 7.5 sacks, 36 pass breakups, seven interceptions and 11 forced fumbles during his career spanning seven seasons in the NFL.
During the last season, Okereke played and started in 17 games while making 143 tackles (2 for loss), one sack, six pass breakups and two interceptions for the Giants.
Okereke was born in Santa Ana, California with his parents hailing from Nigeria. He joined Troop 243 when he was sixteen years old and became an Eagle Scout. Okereke was in Foothill High School where he played football.
He was part of the Stanford Cardinal football team in college, which he was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
