Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas Nick Emmanwori has a health scare right when training camp is getting underway, but the news is not as awful as it looked at first.

The team put Emmanwori on the active/physically unable to perform list on Monday without explanation. This surprised supporters because the second-year defender had been a full participant throughout the spring.
The mystery was solved mid-week when ESPN’s Brady Henderson announced Emmanwori had arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle in July.
Henderson reported that the Seahawks had known for a while that surgery might eventually be required.
Emmanwori spent the offseason working on the ankle, but the soreness returned when he was ramping up for camp. He and the team decided to address it head-on rather than risk a bigger problem during the season.
It’s not the first problem that ankle has had. Emmanwori suffered a high ankle sprain on the opening series of his rookie season last year and missed three games with the injury.
Then a few days before Super Bowl LX, he sprained the same ankle in practice. He gutted it out anyway, playing every defensive snap but one as the Seattle beat New England for the title.
Despite the injury history, Emmanwori was one of the most essential elements of Seattle’s top-ranked defense, finishing his rookie season with 81 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed and an interception in 14 games.
That output nearly won him Associated Press Defensive Rookie of the Year recognition.
Good news for Seahawks fans: Emmanwori will be out for a part of training camp. But he should be ready for Seattle’s regular-season opener.
The game, fittingly, is a Super Bowl rematch as the Seahawks face New England to begin their title defense.
