Kyler Murray reacts to Cardinals release

The Arizona Cardinals plan to release quarterback Kyler Murray.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the team told Murray he will be released on the first day of the new league year — Wednesday, March 11 — unless they complete a trade before then. The Cardinals still owe him $36.8 million in 2026, which makes this decision also costly.

Arizona selected Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in 2019. He spent seven seasons with the team.

High Expectations Fell Short

Team leaders hoped Murray would turn the Cardinals into real contenders. That goal proved too difficult to reach.

His best season came in 2021. He threw for 3,787 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also earned his second straight Pro Bowl selection. That year, Arizona reached the Wild Card round.

Murray finished his time in Arizona with a 38-48-1 record as a starter. He led the team to one playoff appearance.

Injuries and a New Direction

Injuries slowed Murray during the past four seasons. At the same time, the Cardinals struggled to build a strong roster around him.

Now, new coach Mike LaFleur wants to move in a different direction. The team appears ready to explore other quarterback options.

Murray’s Message to Fans

After the news broke, Murray shared a message on social media.

He thanked fans for their support and kindness. He also expressed regret that he could not end the franchise’s 77-year championship drought.

“To everyone that supported me and showed kindness to my family and I during my time in AZ, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I wanted nothing more than to be the one to end the 77 year drought for this organization, I am sorry I failed us.

I wish this community and my brothers nothing but the best. I am no stranger to adversity, I am prepared for whatever’s next. I trust in God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it. Godspeed.” He wrote.

What Happens Next?

If the Cardinals do not trade Murray before March 11, he will become an unrestricted free agent. That means he can sign with any team.

The Vikings, via executive vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski said last week that the team is exploring all opportunities to pursue a quarterback following the struggles of J.J. McCarthy, this means there is a probability that Murray could be one of their targets.
