Africa suffered another World Cup exit as Algeria were knocked out by Switzerland, who have now secured their first knockout stage win since 1938, Yankee Scores reports.
Goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye was enough for the Swiss to progress.
The Swiss took an early lead in Vancouver as Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi wreaked havoc down the wing before beating his man and teeing up a beautiful layoff for Rennes’ forward Embolo to turn home in the 10th minute.
Ndoye, the Nottingham Forest winger, added a second goal just 46 seconds into the second half with a tidy finish in the box.
It was the first time Switzerland had scored more than one goal in a World Cup knockout game since losing 7-5 to Austria in the quarter-finals in 1954.
Algeria, seeking a first ever win in the knockout stages, enjoyed a decent spell before the break but their best chance saw Fares Chaibi fire a tame shot that was easily gathered by Switzerland goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and they rarely threatened after that.
Switzerland had not won a knockout game since beating Germany in the last-16 of the 1938 World Cup – before the introduction of group stages – but they eased through here.
Murat Yakin’s side missed a glorious opportunity for a third late on as Fabian Rieder had a clear chance at the back post with the goal at his mercy but he miscued the ball and it went towards the relieved Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who had looked beaten.
Switzerland have reached the last 16 of the World Cup for the fourth tournament in a row and will face either Colombia or Ghana at 21:00 BST on 7 July at BC Place Vancouver.
