Argentina’s center back and Tottenham defender, Cristian Romero has called out Gary Neville, calling him ‘stupid’ over his criticism of Argentina’s center back pairing at the ongoing FIFA World Cup
According to BBC, England ex-international, Gary Neville said the center back pairing of Cristian Romero and Gary Neville is “the best, worst centre-half pairing in the world” during the build up to the semifinal clash between Argentina and England
Lisandro Martinez and Cristian Romero played a pivotal role in Argentina’s win over England on Wednesday as England was limited to only two shots on target and facilitated the win with brilliant build up play from the back
Martinez and Romero started 6 out of 7 games for Scaloni’s side and have been an important piece in getting Argentina into the finals again, having won the previous edition in 2022
Gary Neville made 85 appearances for the Three Lions between 1995 to 2007 making him the most capped right back in England’s history is widely considered a legend among English fans
But he is now popularly known to make controversial comments about players, coaches and their performances in guise of punditry
“The only thing that I hope for is that when I retire, I am not that stupid. Hopefully I won’t criticise a player or anyone,” Cristian Romero fired back when asked about Neville’s comments.
“Because at the end of the day, we are doing our best for our national team. Sometimes it goes right for us, sometimes badly, but we are just happy to be in a World Cup final again” he added
Argentina will now go on to face Spain on Sunday for a chance to win back to back World Cup titles and the fourth in the nation’s history.
