Australia midfielder Cristian Volpato, who participated in the World Cup, is reported to have failed a cocaine test after being stopped twice in one night by the police due to speeding.
The 22-year-old player was stopped in his BMW Coupe on the Anzac Bridge at 11:05pm local time on Thursday after being found driving at speeds of 86-94km/h in a 60km/h zone.
The player was asked to take a roadside breath test that showed up negative.
However, Volpato reportedly tested positive for cocaine when stopped for traveling at 109km/h in the same 60km/h zone two hours after the first stop, according to BBC Sport.
According to New South Wales state police, Volpato received an infringement notice for speeding, while his international driver’s licence was suspended for six months, meaning that he will not be able to drive in New South Wales.
The investigation into the matter continues according to the police statement, and another sample of his oral fluid was collected.
Volpato participated in three out of four games of the Australia team at the World Cup, which took them to the round of 32, where they were beaten by Egypt in a penalty shootout.
Despite representing Italy as a youth footballer, he opted for Italy at youth level, and switched allegiances to Australia prior to the 2026 World Cup.
Volpato has played at Serie A side Sassuolo since 2023, making24 league appearances for the club which finished 11th last season.
