Barcelona have turned down an opening bid of about €40 million ($46m) from Paris Saint-Germain for Ferran Torres.
Torres, 26, told Barça last week that he wanted to move to the European champions after agreeing his personal terms.
Barça are ready to let the player leave this summer, though they want a bigger fee. His contract at Camp Nou ends in 2027.
The source added that the two clubs were expected to continue to negotiate.
Torres is on holiday after scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final in July when Spain beat Argentina to win the tournament for the second time in the country’s history.
He is expected back in training this week as Barça step up preparations for their LaLiga opener against Elche on Aug. 23.
Torres has been increasingly vocal in a series of interviews since the World Cup about his desire to join PSG.
Torres began his career as a winger but has been deployed mostly as a No.9 in the last couple of seasons at Barcelona.
Last year he bagged 21 goals in 49 appearances, while the year before he scored 19 goals in 45 games.
Barça were told to ‘show me some love’, if they wanted to keep him, hinting at a dream destination.
He later told ESPN last week that he wants to move to PSG, where he would work under Luis Enrique, his former coach with the Spanish national team.
PSG are seeking a new striker following the departure of Goncalo Ramos to AC Milan this summer, with Randal Kolo Muani who was on loan at Tottenham last season joining Juventus permanently.
Luis Enrique has played Ousmane Dembélé in midfield but the boss wants to add more options ahead of the new campaign.
