It’s the biggest World Cup ever on American soil and the host nation is ready. Here’s your full breakdown of what to expect from the United States Soccer Men’s National Team (USMNT) this summer, Yankee Scores reports.
The Squad
Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie lead a 26-man squad announced May 26 in New York by coach Mauricio Pochettino. The average age of the roster is 26 years, 332 days — the fifth-youngest team the United States has ever sent to a World Cup. There’s a nice mix of experience and new faces: 13 players were part of the 2022 squad that got to the round of 16 while the other 13 are making their World Cup debut.
The numbers up front are really exciting. Folarin Balogun, Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright combined for 56 club goals in all competitions this season.

The Group
The USMNT will face Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles, Australia on June 19 in Seattle and Turkey on June 25 again in Los Angeles. Quiet but real structural advantage: playing every group game on the West Coast, no cross-country flights.
Group D looks to be one of the more balanced groups in the tournament. Turkey are dangerous and they are The Americans’ biggest threat to top spot – led by Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Arda Güler and Kenan Yildiz. Paraguay will be compact, organised and tough to break down. Australia meanwhile reached the round of 16 at the last World Cup and have no intention of making up the numbers. This is a winnable group but no-one is rolling over for the hosts.
The Man It All Runs Through
Pulisic is the captain, the talisman and carries the heaviest burden. He was nearly five months without a goal for club or country before he produced a goal and an assist in a 3-2 friendly win over Senegal just days before the tournament – a timely reminder of why he remains a cornerstone of the team’s attack. Turkey’s chances of advancing at about 73%, per ESPN, which is a number that makes it clear the U.S. cannot afford a slow start. And Pulisic cannot afford another long stretch of silence.

Pochettino’s message
The coach is not afraid of the moment. Pochettino has told his players to look at the other sports in America — NFL, basketball — and play fearlessly, with freedom. “You perform when you’re free,” he said. It’s the message that needs to be sent. But if the players can actually bring it onto the pitch at SoFi Stadium on June 12 is another story.
How Far Can They Go?
Realistically, a round of 16 appearance should be the minimum expectation. There is an argument for Pochettino’s side to go on a Cinderella run as deep as the quarterfinals if the bracket cooperates. The talent is there. The coaching is the best this program has ever had. And the crowd will be electric every single game.
The USMNT has waited a long time for a moment like this. Kickoff is June 12.
