The Football Association (FA) has toughened its disciplinary approach to discriminatory behaviour with players, managers and technical-area users now risking a minimum 10-match penalty for serious violations.

New discipline criteria will be introduced from the 2026/27 season and are intended to offer a stronger punishment for discriminatory behaviour in English football

The FA claimed the adjustments were needed to combat what it called “abhorrent conduct” and reinforce its campaign to make a game free of discrimination.

The earlier rules had proposed independent Regulatory Commissions to award match-based punishments between 6 and 12 matches for serious infractions, per BBC

But the amended rules will now provide for a minimum 10-match punishment in applicable instances.

Consequences relate to discriminatory offences affecting protected groups including race, ethnic origin, nationality, religion, sex, sexual orientation and handicap.

The regulatory body reported 10 occurrences of aggravated prejudice in the 2025/26 season, a pointer to the struggle the sport still faces.

The FA’s harsher approach is designed to send a stronger message that discriminatory activity will not be accepted at any level of the game.

The governing body expects the tougher sanctions will be a stronger deterrence and highlight its commitment to eradicating discrimination throughout English sport.
