United States striker Folarin Balogun’s move to Everton collapsed after he decided against joining the club.
Balogun had undergone a medical at Finch Farm, the club’s training complex.
Medical problems forced a revision of the £40m agreement between the two clubs for the 25-year-old striker, per BBC Sports.
Balogun, along with the two clubs, agreed to sign a deal sheet just hours before the deadline expired at 23:00 BST.
The forward became a late target for Everton after Guinea-Bissau international Beto joined Serie A side Fiorentina in a permanent move.
Everton had considered the signing of Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee and Aston Villa striker Tammy Abraham but it all came to naught.
Grealish Back at Everton
Another signing by Everton on transfer deadline day was midfielder Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City.
Jack Grealish played 20 games for Everton during the 2025-26 season before being ruled out until the end of the season due to a foot injury suffered in January.
At 30 years old, he could have moved elsewhere, including his boyhood club Aston Villa, but has chosen to link up again with David Moyes on Merseyside.
“I think I’m at my best at everything in life, not just football, when I feel loved. That’s what the manager has given me, what my team-mates have given me and especially what the fans have given me,” Grealish said.
“Every time I see an Everton fan, it’s just pure love and the way they’ve welcomed me since that first game against Leeds, I’ll never forget that.”
Grealish signed for Manchester City from Aston Villa for £100m in August 2021 and scored two goals and made six assists in 20 appearances in his earlier stint with Everton, earning the Premier League Player of the Month award in August.
The England international recovered from an injury during Manchester City’s Community Shield loss to Arsenal on 16 August.
He also played under Enzo Maresca during Manchester City’s first game of the 2026-27 Premier League season, which saw them defeat Bournemouth 2-1.
