Coco Gauff’s run to her first Wimbledon final is over. The American lost to Karolina Muchova 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-10) in a thrilling semi-final clash on Centre Court, a match that lasted for nearly three hours before the Czech finally clinched it in a gruelling deciding-set tie-break.
Muchova took control early on, breaking Gauff in her second service game and cruising through the opening set 6-2 as the American battled with unforced errors. Gauff regrouped in dramatic fashion, storming to a 4-1 lead in the second set and eventually levelling the match 6-1, displaying the aggressive net play and backhand winners that had carried her through four straight three-set battles earlier in the tournament.

The decider was not without drama. Gauff even had a match point at 9-8 in the tie-break but a missed volley at the net and gave Muchova a reprieve. The Czech kept her nerve to win the tie-break 12-10 and secure one of the biggest wins of her career.
Despite already having two Grand Slam titles to her name, Gauff had never previously made it past the fourth round of this tournament and it’s a brutal way for her to exit. She also came into the match with a 6-1 head-to-head advantage over Muchova, with the Czech’s only victory coming on clay in Stuttgart in April.
According to CBS Sports, It is Muchova’s second career major final appearance, having made the 2023 French Open final, and her first as a Wimbledon finalist. Before the semifinal, she had lost only one set all tournament.
Gauff will now have to wait at least another year for her first opportunity at Wimbledon glory.
