Naomi Osaka has appealed to social media influencers at the US Open to be mindful of the “etiquette” of the game following her second-round victory over Katerina Siniakova.
This has emerged as one of the topics of discussion during the tournament after Naomi Osaka’s first-round victory over Anastasia Zakharova on Monday when some videos surfaced showing influencers not paying attention to the game but rather interested in her oufits and style.
After overcoming a second set scare to beat Katerina Siniakova 6-2 5-7 6-1 and advance to the third round in New York, Osaka said on the issue: “I think obviously if you come to a sporting event, you have to respect the sport.
“I feel like it’s common courtesy to read up on the sport, especially the etiquette.
“I feel like it could be a good thing for people to make the sport of tennis popular to their specific audience, but I think it has to be managed a lot better, especially in the situation like [my] first-round match.
“Overall, I think there is huge positives. You want people to continue to grow the sport. I just think it has to be in a way that everyone knows the rules and the etiquette.”
Osaka added: “I was going to say, today, the umpire told everyone to be quiet – more than I’ve ever heard an umpire tell a crowd to be quiet.
“I do think that in my first match, I wasn’t really paying attention. I normally just focus on the match and the court, but there was a moment where there was people shouting and stuff, and you could hear it quite clearly. I think it bothered my opponent, too.”
Osaka’s Fashion Statement
At the ongoing US Open, she kickstarted the tournament with a gown with the newspaper headlines featuring her. She also had a headband and her hair in cornrows, as well as wearing elbow sleeves, all paying tribute to the look of former NBA great Allen Iverson, per TNT Sports.

Osaka Tones Down Fashion Style in second round
Osaka chose to wear something that was more subtle and sparkly white rather than the vibrant all-white outfit that would fit in better in Wimbledon than in Flushing Meadows.
The 13th-seeded player started well in the opening set, breaking Siniakova without dropping any points in the fourth game of the first set, which she won after breaking the Czech twice.
It seemed as though Osaka was going to walk away easily with the match in the second set after getting 4-2 and 5-3 leads but it turned out that her serve let her down at this particular stage and she ended up losing the set after being broken three straight times 7-5.
The four-time Grand Slam champion regained her composure in the third set and managed to drop just one game in winning her match.
