The Dallas Cowboys have made sweeping coaching changes after missing the playoffs again, parting ways with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after just one season. The move comes after Dallas allowed a league-worst 30.1 points and 251.5 passing yards per game, forcing the front office to act quickly.

Eberflus Fired After Struggles in Dallas

Eberflus, who previously spent three years as head coach of the Chicago Bears, was hired by Dallas to stabilize the defense. Instead, the unit collapsed, prompting his dismissal. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Cowboys replaced him with Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach Christian Parker, who will now lead the defense.

49ers Add Eberflus to Staff

Despite his struggles in Dallas, Eberflus has landed on his feet. The San Francisco 49ers announced they’ve hired him as assistant head coach of defense. At 55, Eberflus brings more than a decade of NFL coaching experience, though he’ll need to rebuild his reputation before earning another coordinator or head coaching opportunity.

He’ll also get a chance to face his former team when the 49ers visit Dallas during the 2026 regular season. That matchup will pit Eberflus against Dak Prescott and the Cowboys offense, adding intrigue to an already heated NFC rivalry.

Parker’s Defensive Vision for Dallas

Meanwhile, Parker has already outlined his philosophy for the Cowboys defense. “The first thing is we’re going to be multiple,” Parker said. “I think that whenever you form a defensive structure, it’s about the players that you have. So our core principles, we’ll be a 3-4 by nature, but 4-3 spacing will be appropriate, 4-2-5 in nickel, different front structures, coverages behind it. But I will say being multiple is probably the most important thing about it.”

With Parker’s approach, Dallas hopes to turn the page on a disastrous season. For Eberflus, the move to San Francisco offers a chance at redemption, though his tenure in Dallas remains a blemish on his coaching résumé.
