Liverpool now face a precarious situation in their pursuit of reaching the semi-finals of the 2025/2026 UEFA Champions League, following a disappointing performance against defending champion PSG, Yankee Scores reports.

Holders PSG Take Control of Quarter-Final Tie

Holders Paris Saint-Germain inflicted a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool in the quarter-finals’ first-leg encounter at the Parc des Princes. The reds succumbed to PSG pressure, with Doue scoring as early as the 11th minute and Kvaratskhelia wrapping it up in the second half with a smart finish.

Desire Doue scored the opening goal through a deflected effort, while Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted the second goal with an amazing finish.  PSG were too good for their opponents at home, handing Liverpool their fourth consecutive away defeat for the first time since April 2012.

Mamardashvili Keeps Liverpool’s Faint Hopes Alive

PSG might even have extended their lead had it not been for some wasteful finishing. Also, Liverpool’s Mamardashvili  denied Doue, Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, and Achraf Hakimi in front of goal.

VAR Controversy: Penalty Decisions Overturned

Luis Enrique’s side also felt aggrieved to be cheated out of a few penalties in the match. VAR overturned the referee’s decision to award a penalty when Konate fouled Warren Zaire-Emery and then refusing to punish him for pushing Nuno Mendes off the ball.

Anfield Awaits: Can Liverpool Pull Off Another Miracle?

Liverpool were lucky not to have suffered more humiliation despite playing a poor game. They will now need to improve significantly next week in the return leg at Anfield after failing to hit the target from any of their three attempts in the game.
