As the Seattle Sounders return to Lumen Field with a two-goal deficit, Yankee Scores examines whether their home-field advantage will help them pull off a miraculous win against the Tigres in the Champions Cup.
Seattle’s Path to the Semi-Finals
The Seattle Sounders FC will soon be back at Lumen Field for one of the matches that make their previous 7-week absence worthwhile.
In the Concacaf Champions Cup (CCC) Quarterfinals Leg Two, Seattle Sounders play Tigres in a must-win fixture on April 15th. Since the Seattle Sounders lost the first leg at Tigres’ Estadio Universitario 2-0 last Tuesday, the next leg will determine which side advances to the semi-finals.
Jesus Ferreira on the Home Advantage
Jesus Ferreira said “It’s going to be special,”
Tigres have a lead of two goals on aggregate so the Sounders need a three-goal victory to progress to the next round. In case Seattle wins the second leg by 2-0, the match will go to extra time. With any other two-goal Seattle win, Tigres advance through the away goals rule.
Returning to action from a 2-goal deficit is no easy task but Seattle have played well in the most pressured situations especially when playing at home at the Lumen Field.
“I think knowing what we have to do and knowing that we’re with our fans …. hopefully we can turn this around,”
Missed Opportunities
In Leg One, there were plenty of Seattle chances despite the fact that the away side lost the fixture. For instance, midfielder Paul Rothrock almost levelled the scores in the 63rd minute. Apart from this goal threat, Seattle created three more scoring chances.
Being aware that they can score at Tigres in a difficult road fixture, combined with having the advantage of home crowd on April 15th, boosts players’ confidence.
This kind of achievement was not new for Seattle in the 2013 CCC quarter-final where the team won the second leg 3-1 having been defeated 1-0 in the first one.
