The Iranian national team is set to honor its FIFA‑graded friendlies, even as tensions rise amid the USA–Israel war. Yankee Scores reports.

Team Melli’s commitment to preparation has drawn attention, with their next test coming against Nigeria in Amman.

Change of Plans

Amir Mehdi Alavi, spokesman for the Football Federation of Iran, confirmed that Iran will face Nigeria on March 27th in Jordan, followed by Costa Rica on March 31st. He stressed that “Team Melli will not abandon its FIFA‑graded fixtures despite political challenges.” This marks Iran’s first friendly since the 2026 World Cup draw, after Spain withdrew from a scheduled match.

Head coach Amir Ghalenoei had initially planned a Nowruz camp in Austria with matches against Scotland and Portugal. However, logistical setbacks forced a shift, leading to Iran’s participation in the Jordan tournament.

Nigeria and Costa Rica Awaits

Nigeria, ranked 26th in FIFA standings, remain one of Africa’s traditional powerhouses. Despite missing out on the 2026 World Cup, they boast stars such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Wilfred Ndidi, and Alex Iwobi. Their physical style mirrors what Iran expects from Egypt in Group G.

Costa Rica, meanwhile, bring a contrasting challenge with their fast, technical play. With six World Cup appearances and Robert Moreno reportedly set to take charge, they promise tactical variety for Iran’s preparation.

Past Encounters

Iran and Nigeria have met twice before: a 1‑0 defeat in the 1998 Hong Kong tournament and a goalless draw at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The third encounter carries more technical weight, as Ghalenoei seeks to simulate African opposition ahead of the group stage.

Preparation

While European friendlies fell through, Iran’s choice of Nigeria and Costa Rica reflects purposeful planning. Ghalenoei explained that “measuring our team against strong opponents is the only way to reveal the true calibre of our players.”

Amid the USA–Israel war, Iran’s insistence on fulfilling its FIFA commitments underscores both resilience and determination. The federation continues to negotiate venue adjustments with FIFA, but the message is clear: Iran will honour its friendlies and prepare for the World Cup.
