The rising temperature in Paris is giving players a torrid time, with Jakub Mensik emerging as the latest victim, Yankee Scores reports…
The Czech collapsed on court after securing victory in the second round of the French Open.
Heat Wave Continues
The temperatures soared to the mid-30s in France, which continued experiencing unusually high temperatures.
In a display of his brilliant moments that had always been affected by injury, the young Czech player collapsed after a five-set match against Argentina’s Mariano Navone, having won 6-3 2-6 6-4 1-6 7-6 (13-11) in four hours and 40 minutes.
From Triumph to Trauma
An ecstatic Mensik fell to the ground; his opponent Navone, in a bid to congratulate him and help him up, discovered he could not move.
He beckoned to the medical staff who attended to him and placed cold packs on different parts of his body.
An ice pack was also placed on the floor for him to rest his head. He recovered in what appeared to be an attempt to revive him. In the end, he was able to walk off the court but stumbled as he walked to the dressing rooms.
The Wheelchair Exit
There are doubts about whether he would play the next round against eighth seed Alex de Minaur on Friday.
He was later taken in a wheelchair to a place outside the court after collapsing due to fatigue.
Mensik was competing on one of the outer courts at Roland Garros, which offer no shade.
Novak Djokovic had to endure almost four hours of heat in Paris.
