The Reign Reaches Its End
Seeded fourth, Gauff went down 4-6 and then recovered enough to take the match to a tiebreak before losing 7-1 in the second set and the match 6-4 in a deciding set.
The win puts Potapova through to her first-ever French Open fourth round after defeating the fourth-seeded Coco Gauff, a two-time Grand Slam champion.
Another Heavyweight Exit
Gauff can now be added to the list of other big names who were eliminated from the tournament in its early stages, as top seed Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, a winner of 24 Grand Slams, also failed to make it past the first week of the competition.
Despite winning last year’s final against Aryna Sabalenka at 22 years old, Gauff had not won any titles in 2026 before coming to play Roland Garros.
Potapova’s defense kept Gauff off balance in the whole game, and the latter was spotted grabbing her left shoulder during the course of the game.
“I’m cramping a little bit but it’s OK, it’s all good. I don’t have any words now, I’m extremely happy,” said Potapova.
“The fight we could show, both of us – Coco is such a champion and I respect her so much.
“I’m unbelievably proud of myself that I stayed there, that I was fighting until the last point.”
Potapova will play her compatriot, the 22nd seed, Anna Kalinskaya, in the round of 16 after beating Camila Osorio 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.
