Former Britain number one Dan Evans has decided to retire from tennis after 2026 edition of the Wimbledon, Yankee Scores reports.
The player has achieved victory in two tournaments on the ATP Tour and was a member of the Davis Cup winning team in 2015 that helped bring the trophy to Britain for the first time in 79 years.
His best ranking was 21st in 2023, but this year he has participated only in five professional games, falling to 217th place in the rankings.
“This sport has given me everything. The friendships, the experiences, the battles and even the hard days were special in hindsight,” he posted on Instagram.
“I have loved every single minute of being a professional tennis player.”
Davis Cup Glory and the Final Stand With Murray
Evans gave up the 500 ranking points that he had earned in the Washington Open in 2023 to play alongside compatriot Andy Murray during his final event in the Olympic Games held in Paris in 2024.
They were defeated in the quarterfinals and it turned out to be the last match for Murray.
“Representing Great Britain in both Davis Cup and the Olympics remains the greatest honor of my career and something I will cherish for the rest of my life,” added Evans, who played 28 Davis Cup ties for Great Britain.
Evans, who was suspended for a year after testing for cocaine in 2017, thanked his family for their “unwavering support through every high and low”.
“I’m looking forward to finishing on a high… and giving everything I have one last time,” he said.
Wimbledon Wildcard
The start date for Wimbledon is 29th June, but Evans will need to qualify or get a wildcard to take part in the main draw, according to BBC Sports.
Evans has not been successful in qualifying at any of the last three Grand Slams, but he was offered a wildcard for the last Wimbledon.
The committee of the wildcard of Wimbledon will be meeting next Tuesday to make their decision.
