It has been officially announced by the President of South American FA Alejandro Dominguez that there are discussions going on to expand the World Cup tournament to 64 teams in 2030.
The coming World Cup will be the hundredth anniversary of the first edition of this event.
The South American countries Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will stage a unique match before the tournament moves to its main hosts which include Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
But it is important for the South American countries to conduct more matches and FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced recently that there will be an expansion of the World Cup from 48 teams to 64, per Skysports.
And CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez tweeted on X earlier this week: “The next one is played at home! In 2030, the World Cup takes place in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, an amazing opportunity for soccer, to celebrate the Centenary of the World Cup with a tournament of 64 teams.”
“We are working to ensure that the 2030 World Cup is held with 64 national teams in homage to the Centenary of the World Cup.
“International football grows when it opens up to the world. The expansion to 48 teams demonstrated that greater participation generates more opportunities, boosts the development of football, and turns the World Cup into a true global celebration.
“The Centenary offers us a historic opportunity to Dream Big. May the World Cup be the greatest celebration that football has ever known.”
