Buckner underwent surgery after worsening a herniated disc in his neck late last season.
The ailment kept him out in Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and while he was able to return briefly against his previous team, the San Francisco 49ers, in Week 16, the issue finally required a season-ending treatment.
Having made strides through the offseason, the veteran defensive tackle had been targeting training camp for his comeback.
Buckner said in April he had been cleared to run and was trying to regain strength after a long road to recovery that at one point left him unable to lift anything heavier than 10 pounds, per ESPN
His return will be huge for a Colts defense that will rely on his leadership and production.
Buckner had 47 tackles, nine tackles for loss and four sacks in 10 games before his 2025 season was cut short.
The Colts went 1-6 last season without him, which shows how important he is to the team’s defensive front.
Buckner is back at practice now, and the Colts will be encouraged by his development. But with significant neck surgery behind him, his workload and availability will undoubtedly be keenly watched as Indianapolis prepares for the regular season.
