Washington Commanders have agreed to a one-year contract worth up to $12 million with wide receiver free agent Stefon Diggs, which will add a proven receiver to be the counterpart of Terry McLaurin, according to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport and ESPN reporter Adam Schefter.
Diggs joins a receiver corps that was already better in 2025, but was also still questioning itself at the top, besides McLaurin.
The wide receiver, who hails from suburban Washington and played college football at the University of Maryland, had indicated his interest in joining the Commanders.
The former Terrapins receiver practiced on Maryland’s first day of fall camp on Wednesday.
“Shout out to my Terps and go Commanders,” he said in the video. “Let’s go!”
The 32-year-old Diggs is going to play for the third new team within three seasons. He gives another solid backup option for the team next to McLaurin, who did not manage to have his sixth straight 1,000-yard season due to an injury.
Diggs has made four Pro Bowl appearances (three years ago was the last one) and in 2020 was a first-team All-Pro as he had the most catches among NFL players, 127.

The absence of depth in receivers for Washington was noticeable last year when McLaurin missed seven games because of a quad injury, while Noah Brown missed 13 games with knee and groin injuries. As a result, five players that were not part of the initial roster managed to make receptions for Washington.
This year, Washington chose a wide receiver in the third round, Antonio Williams, and several team managers are optimistic about his abilities to help the team. In addition, there is Luke McCaffrey, a 2024 third-round draft with 29 receptions in 26 games, and Jaylin Lane, a 2025 fourth-round draft, with 16 catches in the last year, but as a punter returner, he managed to have an average of 13.7 yards per catch and score twice.
Also, they have veterans like Treylon Burks, Van Jefferson, and Dyami Brown, the latter made 30 catches two years ago for the team and even added 14 more in three playoff games. They scored a total of 59 catches, 707 yards, and three touchdowns.
