The New York bullpen pitched 2.2 scoreless innings to close it out after starter Ryan Weathers was hit for seven runs on nine hits in three innings.
The win gave the Yankees a 56-44 record and dropped the Pirates to 52-49. New York are 25-22 at home this season and the win keeps the club near the top of the American League East as the summer stretch continues, per ESPN
Yankees will try to bounce back and even the series when the two teams meet again Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.
The Pirates have been competitive on the road this season, with a 25-25 record away from PNC Park. They’ll need more from their rotation after Ashcraft struggled in the opener, even though he entered the night with a 3.95 ERA.
Both teams will finish the three-game set on Wednesday with New York hoping to wrap up the series win and continue building momentum in a crowded AL East race.
The evening’s first pitch is set for Tuesday’s game at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
