Cunningham’s Double-Double Powers Pistons to 2-0 Series Lead

With a 2-0 lead and a 5-game win streak, are the Pistons unstoppable? Or can the Cavs find their rhythm back in Cleveland on Saturday? Yankee Scores has the full East Semi-Finals breakdown.

Cade Cunningham scored 25 points and handed out 10 assists, while Tobias Harris added 21 points as the Detroit Pistons beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 107-97 on Thursday to make the series 2-0 between the two teams in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Pistons’ Winning Streak Extends to Five

The number one seed Detroit Pistons are on a five-game win streak since being taken to the limit in the first round by the Orlando Magic.

“We’re going to keep swinging,” reserve guard Daniss Jenkins said. “We’re still trying to prove something to ourselves.”

For Cleveland, Donovan Mitchell had 31 points, while Jarrett Allen scored 22 points and seven rebounds. It was a better performance when compared to game 1.

However, James Harden went 4-of-13 for 10 points and committed four turnovers, including one with 33 seconds remaining as the Cavs were trailing by six points.

“We just wear on you,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “That’s what our objective is.”

Cavs’ Shooting Goes Cold

After a 19-point game in Cleveland’s first game of the series, Max Strus scored just three points on Friday night as the Cavaliers failed to convert any of their last 11 shots from behind the arc.

Duncan Robinson led Detroit’s Pistons with 17 points, sinking 5-of-9 from deep, with Daniss Jenkins off the bench contributing with 14 points on 14 points in his third consecutive double-figure game.

Despite having taken a one-point lead in the opening moments, Cavaliers didn’t regain the lead until Evan Mobley’s dunk gave them an 81-79 advantage in the fourth quarter.

While the Pistons had as much as an 11-point first-quarter lead and a 14-point second-quarter lead, they maintained their lead until late in the game.

Cleveland began their last-quarter scoring run with six consecutive points, but Detroit responded effectively with contributions at both ends of the court.

“Unfortunately, it was not a night where we shot the ball well — 7 of 32 from 3,” Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson said.

Duncan Robinson scored a go-ahead 3-pointer with 9:40 remaining, followed by Cunningham’s 3 that put Detroit up nine points with 2:12 left, giving them the win.

The Pistons had also won Game 1 by 10, with Cunningham and Mitchell each scoring 23 points.

Pistons’ Leaders

Game 2 saw Cleveland Cavalier guard Sam Merrill miss his turn due to a hamstrung suffered in the series’ first game. Merrill had contributed 12.8 points per game during the regular season and recorded a double-digit game in the seven-game series against the Raptors.

The third game will be played in Cleveland on Saturday, as the Cavs were undefeated at home in the opening round series against the Toronto Raptors.
