John Wall’s next chapter isn’t on the court but in the front office. The five‑time NBA All‑Star returns to Washington, stepping into the role of president of basketball operations at Howard University. Yankee Scores reports.
A Return to Washington
John Wall who played and spent a decade with the Washington Wizards after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2010, is back in the city where his professional journey began. His connection with Howard started earlier this year, Jan 31 when he served as an honorary captain and expressed his desire to one day lead an NBA front office.

Shaping Howard’s Future
Now, Wall is already hands‑on in his new role. He’s involved in team meetings, recruiting evaluations, and strategic planning. His responsibilities include roster management, NIL deals, revenue sharing, and player mentorship. Working alongside coach Kenny Blakeney and GM Daniel Marks, Wall is helping to shape the program’s vision.
Howard has become one of the nation’s top HBCU basketball programs, making the NCAA tournament three times in the past four years, one of the five mid-major programs out of 222. This season, the Bison celebrated their first tournament win in school history, a milestone Wall hopes to build upon.
Wall’s Legacy and Inspiration
Wall retired last year with career averages of 18.7 points and 8.9 assists, remembered as one of the fastest and most athletic point guards of his era. He was the 2014 slam dunk champion. He also made the All-Defensive second team in 2015.
His move mirrors recent trends, with stars like Stephen Curry who accepted a role with Davidson College as an assistant general manager for the basketball programs last year.
Trae Young was also previously hired by Oklahoma Sooners as an assistant general manager for the men’s basketball last year, where he pledged a $1 million to the program. For Howard, Wall’s leadership represents both prestige and opportunity.
