Kristaps Porzingis Re-Signs With Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are re-signing veteran center Kristaps Porzingis on a two-year, $40 million contract that includes a player option for the second season, Yankee Scores reports.

Porzingis signed an extension of his current contract that will enable him to negotiate and agree to terms with the Warriors before hitting free agency, per ESPN

How He Came to Golden State

Golden State acquired the Latvian 30-year-old from Atlanta in a trade at the February deadline that sent Buddy Hield and Jonathan Kuminga to the Hawks.

Despite limited run-in time, he made an impression. The 7-foot-2 veteran played in only 32 games for both teams this season, averaging 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists, playing in 15 games for Golden State with 11 starts.

Availability Has Been a Concern

Porzingis remains inconsistent health wise. He’s also been suffering from a condition called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, or POTS, which causes a rapid heartrate, dizziness and severe fatigue, in recent years.

He shot career-high 41.2 percent from three-point range last season but was limited to just 42 regular-season games in part because of the illness.

Complications Ahead Cap

The signing does add some financial complexity for the Warriors front office.

The Porzingis trade makes it harder for the Warriors to clear enough cap space to offer LeBron James the full $15.1 million nontaxpayer mid-level exception as an unrestricted free agent, though there are still ways to create enough financial space, especially with Draymond Green opting to decline his $27.6 million player option.

How does he fit?

The Warriors feel Porzingis is a perfect rim protector to go next to Green in the front court who can take advantage of the space created by Steph Curry and feel they re-signed him under market value if he can stay healthy.

In 10 NBA seasons, Porzingis is averaging 19.5 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. On paper the fit is hard to argue with. Porzingis’s body is the only thing that has ever stopped him from being a huge impact in Golden State.
