The NBA has seen legends dominate defense, but never like this. Victor Wembanyama just set a milestone no one else has reached. Yankee Scores reports.

History

Victor Wembanyama is a French professional basketball player who has quickly become one of the brightest young stars in the NBA. Standing at 7-foot-4, he’s known for his extraordinary wingspan, agility, and versatility, a rare combination that allows him to dominate both offensively and defensively.

Drafted first overall by the San Antonio Spurs in 2023, Wembanyama was immediately hailed as a generational talent. In 2024, he won Rookie of the Year, and since then been on a high trajectory. His ability to block shots, stretch the floor with perimeter shooting, and handle the ball like a guard makes him one of the most unique players in league history.

At just 22 years old, Wembanyama has not only become the centerpiece of the Spurs’ resurgence but a glimmer of hope for the Spurs culture and defensive side of the game.

A Unanimous Choice

For the first time in league history, the Defensive Player of the Year award was decided without debate. Victor Wembanyama, at just 22 years old, became the youngest winner ever and the first unanimous selection. His dominance in shot‑blocking and rim protection left voters with no alternative.

Leading the NBA in blocks for the third straight season, Victor Wembanyama consistently disrupted opponents. His presence forced teams to adjust lineups and strategies, proving his impact was far beyond the stat sheet.

Victor Wembanyama is the first unanimous DPOY since the award was created in 1982-83 😳

Spurs Legacy Grows

San Antonio now boasts four different players to win DPOY, joining Alvin Robertson, David Robinson, and Kawhi Leonard. Wembanyama’s achievement cements the Spurs’ reputation as a franchise built on defense and discipline.

The Spurs hold the NBA record for the most DPOY award winners 🔥

Rare Company

Only Michael Jordan and David Robinson had previously won both Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Wembanyama now joins that exclusive club, while also becoming the only player to win two major awards unanimously.

What’s Next

Already a finalist for MVP, Wembanyama is guaranteed multiple honors this season, including All‑NBA and All‑Defensive team selections. For Spurs fans, the excitement is not just about the award, it’s about the future of a generational talent who continues to redefine the game.
