Tech billionaire Vinod Khosla and a group of investors have agreed to purchase the Seattle Seahawks in a transaction that would break the NFL franchise selling record at $9.612 billion

Record price beats recent sales

The deal revealed blows beyond the previous NFL record of $6.05 billion, paid when a Josh Harris-led company bought the Washington Commanders in 2023

The Khosla family is buying the defending Super Bowl winners from the estate of late owner Paul Allen, who purchased the Seahawks for $194 million in 1997.

Khosla Must Sell 49ers Stake

Vinod Khosla, a minority partner with the San Francisco 49ers, will have to give up that ownership interest as part of the deal.

The NFL has regulations against cross-ownership in the same division. In 2025 he bought into the 49ers ownership group, taking a 3.1% part in a franchise valued at little north of $8.5 billion.

According to Sports Illustrated, the founder of Khosla Ventures and the co-founder of Sun Microsystems has a net worth of over $13.7 billion.

Sale Achieves Allen’s Goals

The NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers were also among Paul Allen’s assets that he instructed to be sold at some point and the money donated to charity, along with the Seahawks.

The Seahawks were up for sale following Paul Allen’s death in 2018 per his desires. Since his death, the franchise has been operated by Allen’s sister, Jody Allen.

The transaction comes just months after the Seahawks won the Super Bowl over the New England Patriots.

Neeru Khosla, Vinod’s wife, would be the team’s control owner, according to a memo the NFL has given to its clubs, and son Neal also is likely to have a leadership position.

The transaction still requires approval by NFL owners, with a vote expected at a special meeting in late August.
