It’s not random timing. Just days before this announcement, Fitzgerald was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, and the Cardinals opted to combine the two accolades into one night instead of separating them.
Those who have followed Fitzgerald’s career understand he was never one to chase the spotlight, so linking the Ring of Honor ceremony to his Hall of Fame celebration is fitting for a player like him
Fitzgerald spent all 17 seasons of his NFL career with Arizona. He is second in NFL history in catches and receiving yards, stats that helped him become the face of the franchise’s rise to significance, including its only Super Bowl participation after the 2008 season.
He’ll become the sixth player in franchise history to have his number retired, joining Larry Wilson, Pat Tillman, Stan Mauldin, J.V. Cain and Marshall Goldberg.
