The Minnesota Vikings have turned heads by hosting free agent quarterback Kyler Murray. YankeeSports reports

The former Arizona Cardinals star, recently cut despite a hefty guaranteed salary, is now exploring his next chapter.

Murray Meets the Vikings

According to the Associated Press, “The Minnesota Vikings are hosting Kyler Murray on a free agent visit,” confirmed by a source familiar with the situation. The Cardinals released Murray at the start of the new league year, even though they owed him $36.8 million in guaranteed money.

This bold move by Minnesota signals their intent to strengthen the quarterback position, especially after J.J. McCarthy’s injury-plagued 2025 season.

A Career of Highs and Lows

Murray’s journey has been marked by brilliance and setbacks. A Heisman Trophy winner at Oklahoma, he became the No. 1 overall pick in 2019 and was named AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. His highlight reel includes the unforgettable “Hail Murray” touchdown in 2020 against Buffalo.

Yet, injuries and questions about his work ethic clouded his tenure in Arizona. Despite two Pro Bowl selections and over 3,000 rushing yards with 32 touchdowns, his relationship with the Cardinals soured after a controversial contract clause in 2022.

Vikings’ Quarterback Dilemma

Minnesota’s quarterback situation remains uncertain. McCarthy, their 2024 first-round pick, has shown flashes of talent but struggled with accuracy and durability. Last season, the Vikings relied on Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer as backups, underscoring the need for depth.

Head coach Kevin O’Connell now faces a pivotal decision: stick with McCarthy’s development or bring in Murray as a proven, if risky, alternative.

What’s Next for Murray

In a farewell post, Murray admitted regret over leading Arizona to the playoffs only once, but added: “I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it.”

If the Vikings take the gamble, Murray could provide immediate competition and veteran leadership. For a franchise searching for stability under center, this visit may be the start of a new era.
