A consortium headed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is on the verge of a deal to buy around a one-third stake in Liverpool.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the Anfield club’s controlling shareholder since 2010, is expected to announce a deal as early as this week.

The deal will see Mr Bezos join an investor group that includes Eduardo Saverin, one of the founders of social network Facebook, per Skysports.

The syndicate is led by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and until recently a part-owner of Championship club Queens Park Rangers.

One source said an announcement was expected in the coming days, tho they warned it could slip into next week.

The deal, if it passes, will see three of the world’s richest men become co-owners of the Reds, one of the most successful teams in English football history.

Mr Bezos has not been linked to deals in football before but his potential involvement in the Liverpool FC consortium shows how sport is now seen by wealthy investors as an asset class in its own right.

Mr Saverin, 44, was involved in a consortium that mounted an unsuccessful bid for Chelsea FC during the 2022 auction following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

One insider said: “The deal is now expected to be a little bigger than thought, maybe a stake of over 30 per cent.”

But if it values the club at £4.4bn ($6bn), the deal will underline the financial success FSG has enjoyed in its 16 years as owner of the club.

The Boston Red Sox owner acquired Liverpool for only £300m with the club in a troubled state off the pitch.

Such a powerful consortium will fuel expectations that the members will eventually seek outright control of the Reds.

Last month an FSG spokesman said: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”

FSG declined to comment further on when a deal could occur.

Also declining to comment was a spokesman for the consortium led by Mr Bhatia.

The last time a stake in Liverpool was traded was in 2023 when Dynasty Equity bought a minority stake at a valuation of more than £3.3bn ($4.5bn).
