Colombia have booked their spot in the knockout stage of the World Cup with a victory over DR Congo courtesy of a deflected strike from Daniel Munoz, Yankee Scores reports.

Colombia wasted a series of chances before Crystal Palace wing-back Munoz finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, cheered on by the majority of the crowd in Guadalajara.

Munoz’s left-footed shot found the net after a clever pass from Juan Fernando Quintero took a touch off the defender to wrong-foot DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi and sneak in at the near post.

Colombia’s second successive win moves them to the top of Group K and confirms their place in the last 32. DR Congo are third and must beat Uzbekistan in their final group game to have any hope of progressing.

Munoz, the match-winner, was a constant threat and should have put Colombia ahead inside four minutes but sent his close-range shot into the side netting after Jhon Arias’ shot had been parried into his path.

Two minutes later Munoz did bundle the ball into the net after his first header was saved but it was very tight and he was just offside.

Colombia picked up where they left off and were dominant during a relentless opening 20 minutes but could not find a way past Mpasi.

They were top at the break and Luis Diaz should have put them in front on 50 minutes but missed the target with only Mpasi to beat, Arias then dragging the follow-up wide.

But as it looked like being a night of frustration for Colombia, Quintero slid the ball through for Munoz who beat Mpasi.

DR Congo pushed hard for a late leveller but Colombia held on for a well-deserved victory.
