Premier League giants Liverpool have dismissed their Dutch manager, Arne Slot, Yankee Scores reports…
Slot won Liverpool’s 20th league title in his first season but had a terrible campaign last season, which saw Liverpool finish 5th and go trophyless despite three marquee signings—Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, and Florian Wirtz.
In the league, Liverpool lost 12 games, won 17 and drew 9 to amass just 60 points, 25 point adrift of the league champions Arsenal. The sixty-point total is the Reds’ lowest since the 2013-2014 season.
The £319.5 Million Conundrum
The signings of the trio cost Liverpool a record-breaking transfer fee of £319.5 million, unfortunately, Slot couldn’t play the high-intensity game fans saw under Jurgen Klopp.
Despite Liverpool suffering from a difficult season which saw his side lose nine out of twelve matches across all competitions at a point, Liverpool continued to back Slot despite his poor run of results. However, there were indications that changes would be made at Anfield this summer.
Slot has been accused of playing too defensively with his tactics having been described as lacking an attacking edge.
Liverpool lost nineteen matches across all competitions and suffered from injuries to some of their players such as the £125 million Alexander Isak.
The Pursuit of Iraola
According to Yankee Scores sources, the Liverpool management wanted a return to heavy-metal football and have begun searching for a replacement for Slot. Andoni Iraola is one of the managers that has been mentioned as possible replacements.
Andoni Iraola is set to leave AFC Bournemouth when his contract expires in summer having managed to guide his side to a top six finish.
Slot was named Liverpool head coach in May 2024, on a three-year contract after a successful stint with Dutch side Feyenoord.
Official Statement
A joint statement from Liverpool owners Saturday said: “That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying.
“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and — most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves — successful.
“At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward.
“As such, we can only wish Arne well in the next stage of his coaching career, with our expectation being that he will continue to be successful. We do so in the knowledge that his Liverpool legacy is intact and will become yet more meaningful in the years and decades to come.
“Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.
