One of the best defenders in football history and a legendary captain, Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66
The former Italy international spent his entire senior club career with Milan, representing the Rossoneri more than 700 times between 1977 and 1997.

He became a symbol of one of the club’s greatest successful periods, guiding Milan to three European Cup victories and six Serie A titles.
Baresi was a pioneer of contemporary defensive play, noted for his understanding of the game, positioning and leadership.
His impact was not limited to his club career, the defender also made 82 appearances for Italy and was a major part of the national team’s run to the 1994 World Cup final, according to BBC
Milan retired his iconic No 6 shirt in his tribute with Baresi thereafter going on to represent the club as honorary vice-president.
Following the announcement, the club paid tribute to its great captain, saying his example and ethics had become part of the DNA of Milan forever.
Baresi’s death follows health concerns in previous years. He had surgery in August 2025 to remove a lung nodule and was on immunotherapy treatment.
His death brings the end of an era for Italian football, with Baresi’s status as a defender, captain and one club legend firmly cemented.
