The competition began in 1955 as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup (European Cup). Current Format

Since the 2024-25 season, the Champions League uses a new Swiss-model league phase:

36 teams compete in a single league table.
Each team plays 8 matches (4 home, 4 away) against 8 different opponents drawn from four seeding pots.
Top 8 teams advance directly to the Round of 16.
Teams ranked 9th–24th enter knockout play-offs for the remaining 8 spots.
The knockout phase features two-legged ties until the single-leg final.

The 2025-26 season kicked off with qualifying rounds in July 2025. The league phase ran from 16 September 2025 to 28 January 2026.

Knockout stages are underway, with the final scheduled for 30 May 2026 at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary. Paris Saint-Germain are the defending champions, having won their first title in the 2024-25 season.
