Tottenham Exit Champions League Despite Win

Xavi Simon for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur produced their best performance under Igor Tudor, but it wasn’t enough to overturn a heavy first-leg defeat against Atletico Madrid, Yankee Scores reports.

Spurs claimed a deserved victory at home, yet their Champions League journey ended in the last-16 stage after a 5-2 loss in Madrid left them with too much to do.

Spurs Show Fight at Home

Tottenham started brightly, knowing the first goal was crucial. Randal Kolo Muani delivered it on the half-hour mark, heading in Mathys Tel’s inviting cross.

Tel nearly doubled the lead soon after, but Juan Musso — deputising for the injured Jan Oblak — made a vital save to keep Atletico ahead on aggregate.

Atletico Respond, Spurs Rally

Julian Alvarez silenced the home crowd just after the restart with a stunning strike into the top corner. Spurs protested, claiming Xavi Simons had been fouled in the build-up, but the goal stood.

Simons quickly restored Tottenham’s lead with a fine low drive, sparking belief inside the stadium. Spurs pressed hard, with Musso denying Pedro Porro and Radu Dragusin.

Atletico Seal Progress

The decisive blow came with 15 minutes left when David Hancko headed in Alvarez’s corner, ending hopes of a dramatic turnaround. Simons’ late penalty gave Spurs the win on the night, but Atletico advanced 7-5 on aggregate.

As reported, “Atletico were finally able to breathe easily as they face a last-eight meeting with Barcelona.” Spurs, meanwhile, must now focus on survival in the Premier League, starting with a crucial clash against Nottingham Forest.

What’s Next?

Atletico Madrid prepare for a quarter-final showdown with Barcelona, while Tottenham turn their attention to domestic struggles. Tudor’s men showed spirit, but their European adventure ends here.
