Roger Goodell

The NFL isn’t treating Melbourne as a one-off showcase. Commissioner Roger Goodell made it clear that the league sees Australia as part of its long-term vision. Yankee Scores reports.

Goodell’s Commitment to Australia

Speaking at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Goodell promised fans that the September 11 clash between the San Francisco 49ers and LA Rams would not be the last. “There’s no question that we’re going to be playing here again,” he told reporters, adding, “Our view is that we’re coming here for the long term. We don’t come as a one-offs. This isn’t a circus.”

Strong Demand for Tickets

The 100,000-seat stadium has already seen overwhelming demand. Roger Goodell revealed that ticket sales were so strong they could have sold out during pre-sale, but the league held back to ensure U.S. fans had access. He even hinted at challenging the NFL’s regular-season attendance record of 105,121 set in 2009. “It’s going to be darn close and maybe we can get there,” he said.

Possible Return in 2027

Pressed on whether the NFL could return as early as 2027, Goodell replied, “It might.” His comments reinforced the league’s commitment to expanding globally, with Australia now firmly on the radar.

Shanahan’s Concerns

Not everyone is thrilled. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan previously voiced frustration about opening the 2026 season in Melbourne, questioning the benefit for his team. Goodell acknowledged the concern: “Coach Shanahan is enthusiastic and a great football coach… but his job is to win. We’re going to make it a great experience for the team.”

Looking Ahead

The Melbourne game is more than just a spectacle—it’s a statement of intent. With record-breaking crowds possible and a return already being discussed, the NFL is planting roots Down Under.
